A knee-high dawn redwood with a straight trunk and tiers of feathery green foliage, growing in a large dotted stone pot on a balcony beside a red-leaved maple.

By now I’m very happy to see that everything works out well and repotting + root pruning didn’t effekt the tree much. In my view this tree need more width and more ramification. So cutting the foliage back might help it produce more side shoots at the branches.

Top-down view into a dark round pot showing a dawn redwood's trunk and radiating branches flushed with fresh light-green spring foliage over gritty soil.

Good it survived, the foliage emerges. I love how it looks so feathery as it expands its leaves. Now I wait for the tree to grow throughout the summer and maybe prune it.

Sadly I accidentally dropped the photos of this event. I didn’t cut much root but I took out the large knobbly bit at the bottom of the base. The rest was simply filling the new large pot with endless amounts of soil. Btw this is the biggest pot I own. This should give the tree enough room to conquer and grow larger with a thicker trunk.

A dawn redwood with a straight reddish-brown trunk and layered soft green needles, in a round terracotta pot set inside a pale stone bowl, a wooden barrel to the right.

You can see the big wounds of 2024 where I reset the whole tree. But new grows has emerged evenly. Throughout the year I left this tree alone and fertilized it through spring and summer. I don’t wire the tree yet because the branches are to thin.

As you can see the pot stands inside a larger pot, which is preserved for next years spring. My expectation is that the tree will thrive in a larger pot. And while I’m on it I can remove the woody round bit at the bottom front. That’s really ugly.

Background

I bought this tree in early 2023, in a garden centre. They had two of these and I selected the one more nice looking. For quite a while I haven’t had a clue what to do with it. I cut branches and simply maintained it for a bit. At 2024 I decided this should become a bonsai one day, but for that it had not a single branch in the right position (even with wire). Further the main stem was impossible for me to bend.

In late authumn 2024 I removed every single branch that was left and decided to make it all over again. Please note that I kept the tree in the cellar (with an open window) over the winter, since I wasn’t sure if the tree could make it through the frost will all the wounds.
