Observation

While all the other tree seem to grow the single bud this plant has is slowly turning black. Maybe these walnut trees only take some time to get online. If not I think I don’t have the right conditions for this tree to survive. I’m not willing to do the moss trick every year.

Since this tree recovered so well - it didn’t really grow much 1-2 cm at max, but it got leaves and healthy roots again, I deceided to repot the tree back into a pot. I did it because I want to overwinter it in the cellar (that has a small window) because I’m afraid of the frost. My friend who gifted me this tree originally, also overwintered it in her cellar, so maybe it’s better to repot it now and keep it save. Overwatering is a problem I think so the pumice part of the soil mix is pretty large. Let’s see how it turns out.

Ok, I can officially confirm the Peter Chan Moss trick works. Three months later this tree is in perfect health and I don’t have to worry anymore. As you can see the roots are even coming through the bottom. It’s just awesome how much you can learn by watching Herons Bonsai (UK) on YouTube.

After putting it out on the balcony around April, I noticed the tree is not doing a lot. The small walnut only has a single bud on the end of a thin stem. I’m afraid to instantly kill the tree right after I got it, so I placed it in sphagnum moss in a small tray with holes in it. This way the roots can easily grow through the soft moss and also get fresh air. That should help it I hope.

When I visiting an old friend, we went to her garden. She showed me proudly that a squril has barried a walnut in her flower pot and as she pulled it out from her cellar in the spring a tiny walnut tree has sprouted. Eversince she left the tree in the pot and grew it on for a bit. And when I told her I’m trying to get into the tree thing, she said if I wanted to she would hand it over to me. She didn’t really know what to do other than leaving it in the pot. So I took it with me and left it in my cellar for the rest of the year. Sadly I forgot to take pictures for this event.
